We are excited to announce the first Research Image Award within the Alabama Materials Institute (AMI) for the year of 2024!
The deadline for image entry is February 28, 2025. Winners will be announced on March 15, 2025.
Research is about exploring, finding, and understanding nature. Images related to research can be instrumental in helping people better understand such discoveries. With this contest, AMI wants to highlight current research at the University of Alabama.
Undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and visiting scientists on and off the UA campus are invited to submit images taken at this facility for the contest.
Images can be either of these two categories:
- Microscopy Images: Must be taken at AMI. High-Res JPEG, TIFF or PNG formats
- Graphics / Illustration: Data must be taken at AMI. High-Res JPEG, TIFF or PDF formats
IImages can be edited to add false color or colormap but images cannot be merged with any other outside images that are not taken on the instruments within the facility. Artificially generated images using any AI engine and not collected on the instruments are not allowed.
All entries will be judged by a multidisciplinary panel based on image quality, research significance, and visual impact. They should be original and effective at the information communicated. The work of Finalists will be displayed at the AMI website and office.

Finalists compete for the following prizes:
- Grand Award: $250
- Runner-up: $150
- Honorable mention: $100
