CAF Vibrator Polisher User Policy

In the interest of providing a clean, usable, and functional vibratory polisher, the following steps will be taken in order to ensure the work space and equipment associated with the vibratory polisher in 1069 Bevill do not fall into disrepair.

  • Moving forward, users will be expected to either a) purchase their own sets of group equipment, or b) check out equipment provided by the CAF.
  • Equipment checked out by the CAF will consist of:
    • Holders – 1½” or 1¼”, up to two, with O-rings
    • Weights – up to four available.
  • Release agent and pad roller
  • All equipment must be fully cleaned after each use.  This includes disassembly/removal of screws, cleaning the interiors of sample holders, ultrasonicating in DI water with a drop of Dawn soap, and fully drying to prevent rust.  Due to the caustic nature of certain polishing suspensions, associated lab space and polishing equipment must also be cleaned and wiped down.
  • Warnings will be issued for users who do not properly clean equipment and/or laboratory space.  After two warnings equipment access will be restricted or removed.
  • Access to the vibratory polisher will now be restricted through the ARMS.  Users may sign up for up to two (2) days of total time with the polisher to ensure adequate time to polish all necessary samples.  Aside from this maximum duration, reservations will be made in accordance with listed CAF reservation policies.
  • Group consumable items will be provided by the user (e.g. polishing pads, O-rings, group specific polishing solution).
  • A sign-in sheet will be placed next to the polisher.  Each user is expected write their name, log the data and time, sample type, polishing suspension used and if a new pad was used, what type of pad.  This information needs to be documented if user is expecting to re-use solution and pad.
