2024 Research Image Award Winners

The Alabama Materials Institute is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 Research Image Award. The winners were recognized at the Spring 2025 town hall.


Grand Award

Alexandra Avera provided an image of a 3D multicellular tissue-like model developed from stem cells. It shows a complex network of fibrous extracellular matrix, extracellular vesicles, and neural end feet wrapping around individual cells.

Runner Up

Zach Feller’s image, called Starry Night, is an etched microstructure of nickel superalloy Waspaloy imaged through Keyence using darkfield imaging.

Honorable Mention

Joseph Danner’s image, The Great Divide, is a freeze-fractured polyvinylidene fluoride membrane revealing the interior morphological features affecting liquid transport during pressure-driven filtration processes.
