UA Wins National Science Foundation DMREF Grant

On September 20, 2023, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced their selection of 37 four-year grants in the highly competitive “Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future (DMREF)” program. The University of Alabama is one of the awardees.

Professor Gregory Thompson (Metallurgical & Materials Engineering) will lead a team of faculty and students from Colorado State University and UC-San Diego in designing a new “tough” ceramic that is based in altering the phase stability in a variety of carbide and nitride ceramics.

This $2M grant will provide a new class of ceramics with resilient mechanical properties to support materials in extreme environments and offer exciting educational opportunities in expanding materials education to secondary school students and teachers between Alabama-Colorado-California.
